How Long Does It Take to Paint A Room?

How Long Does It Take to Paint A Room? When determining how long it will take a painting contractor or you to successfully painting a room, you’re going to have to consider several factors.

The information in this article is a rough estimate of how long it will take a contractor or an experienced painter to tackle a painting room job.

Size of the room

For this article, we’re going to discuss painting a bedroom as they are the most common room in the house. On average bedrooms are 13 ft by 13 ft with 8ft high ceilings or 430 sq ft. For this article, I will use these measurements to determine how long it will take to paint a room.

#1 Time needed for prep Work

The first thing you need to understand is that painting is not just about getting paint on the walls as quickly as possible you also need to prepare the room and the walls before you apply any paint. Inspect the walls for any pinholes or repairing any damage you find.

We assume you will not need any extensive drywall repair work before you paint an estimate it takes about 10 minutes to fill in any minor imperfections. Leave to drive for 5 minutes and then send them.

You also need to add some trim to cover any switches outlets doors or Windows and floors to prevent painting up and unwanted places. My estimate will take about 40 minutes to trim an average size bedroom if you invest in a high-quality trimming tape like frog tape, you can save yourself a lot of time and hassle in this part of the process.

Cheap tape rarely sticks correctly and often let’s paint leak through it, meaning it’s offering little or no protection. The last part of the prep process will lie out your drunk clothes and ensuring you have all your materials in place this will take about 10 minutes.

So on average it takes 80 to 90 minutes to prepare room before we can start painting.

#2 Time needed for Cutting In The Ceiling and Trim

Any professional painter will tell you the next part of the painting process involves cutting in the ceiling. This means that you need to paint next to the ceiling with your brush to help create an obvious line between where your walls meet your ceilings.

On average, a person can expect to spend 40 to 60 minutes applying the first coat and 30 to 40 minutes applying the second coat. You also have to brush around outlet switches in any corners where your rollers cannot reach and next to any other trim that you’ve put up.

We think that on average it’ll take about 30 minutes to apply honey cutting trim coating in an average bedroom.

Access will tell you you can speed this process up by purchasing a high quality angled paintbrush. These brushes allow you to move faster and hold larger quantities of paint than a standard 2in smaller brush.

We estimated it will take just over 120 min to cut in your trim and ceilings correctly

#3 Time needed to Roll Out or paint the Walls

Once you’ve correctly prepped your room and cut in your trim and ceilings, the easiest part of the entire process is to roll out your walls. It should only take about 40 minutes to roll out a single coat of paint in an average bedroom.

We estimate it will take 80 minutes on average to apply to paint to an average size bedroom

#4 Touch and clean up time

Your paint job is not finished until you give it the last touch up and clear up everything that’s in the room replace it as you found it. This step in the process should take about 30 minutes.

So in order to paint a bedroom, you need to follow these four steps

• The time needed for prep Work – 80 min
• The time needed for Cutting In The Ceiling and Trim – 120 mins
• The time needed to Roll Out or paint the Walls – 80 mins
• Touch and clean up time – 30 mins
